In 1954,Ray Kroc, distributor of the Multi-Mixer, a five-spindled milkshake machine, headed west to California to learn about a hamburger stand called McDonald’s. Kroc met with the stand’s owners, Dick and Mac McDonald and was very impressed with the operation. So Much so, that he pitched the idea of establishing these quick-service restaurants all over the country through franchising.

Kroc opened his first McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955.His first day’s revenue was $366.12.By 1961, his unshakable confidence in these restaurants led him to buy out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million.

While Ray Kroc was pursuing his dream of building McDonald’s, another entrepreneur named Dick Hofman was leaving the service after serving in the Air Force during World War II and Korea. He and his Brother had started in the restaurant business working in the family hamburger stands in Long Beach, California. Upon retiring from the Air Force in Colorado in 1964 he naturally went back to what he loved, the restaurant business. He and his wife Virginia quickly built three successful restaurants in Colorado Springs .However, as native Californians they wanted to return “home”.

In 1974 Dick was given the opportunity by McDonald’s Corporation to buy two McDonald’s restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula in central California. It wasn’t Long Beach, but it was California.

Dick at age 59, his wife Virginia, son Landon and daughter Gina, left Colorado to take over two McDonald’s Restaurants in Monterey and Seaside, California. The Family as it had been in Colorado was to be involved in operating the McDonald’s.

Landon in 1967 upon graduating from College with a degree in Political Science made a life altering decision. Rather than entering Law School Landon decided to work with his father and continue to grow the family business.

Over the many years the Hofman Organization was recognized as one of the most energetic and creative organizations in the San Francisco Region. Even though Dick was not a young man, he was admired by his fellow operators and served for eight years on the McDonald’s NOAB (National Operators Advisory Board ) and as President of the San Francisco advertising cooperative. Landon has served on the McDonald’s OPNAD (Operators’ National Advertising) Advisory Committee, and was Chairman of this National Committee for four years. Both Dick and Landon served on many regional McDonald’s committees representing their fellow operators and helping to build Brand McDonald’s.

As Dick aged his every day involvement in the organization diminished. By 1990 Landon had assumed leadership of the company. Sadly, at age 96,the founding father of The Hofman Organization, Dick Hofman passed away but his spirit of innovation, determination and commitment to excellence with class live on in his family, friends, and the company he built. With McDonald’s Restaurants located in and around the Salinas-Monterey area, almost 500 employees deliver that commitment to thousands of customers each and every day.
